Children's Books That Make Me Cry

Wednesdays are our "Library Day". Our local library has a wonderful toddler story time with Ms. Dana our Librarian. After story time we head into the library to check some books out. With 3 kids picking stories to take home, I barely have time to review the book before someone is handing me another. So my checks are quick and sometimes we take books home that don't often reflect our rule of life. For example, last week I saw a book called "Chicken Cheeks". It looked harmless enough, but when we took it home it was all about names you can call your backside. After telling my own kids to stop talking about their "butts", I bring home a book all about "butts", derrieres, cabooses, etc. Before they got a chance to read it, I sat it aside to return it.
However amidst the wrong choices there are the stories that are gems that while reading them to your children you burst out crying because they're so beautiful. Today was such a day when I opened up a book called, "The Giant Hug" by Sandra Horning. It's about a pig who wants to send his granny a hug in the mail. He doesn't send a drawing but an actual hug delivered to his grandmother by everyone who takes care of the envelope he sends. I don't know if I'm hormonal or just missing my own mother, but I started crying while I was reading it to Xavi. I almost couldn't finish it. After we finished we hugged each other a lot. It was a very affectionate and tender moment for the two of us. There are a couple of other books that make me cry when I read them to the kids, one is "I'll Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch and the other one is, "Just In Case You Wonder" by Max Lucado. So what books make you cry?

almost anything by Patricia Polacco. The last children's book to make me cry was one of those candy cane story books...you know the christian explanation type storybooks...the kid almost dies and something about it resonated with Stephen and there I was reading it to my Sunday School class taking great pauses before words. Love how you put the pictures of the books at the top of your post, thanks for sharing, I'll have to check out that first one and maybe even the one about giving different definitions for our back side...that sounds hilarious, but then again we have other issues that we have problems with so that's where I show caution.

That is hilarious - the butt book, not the sweet tender hugging moments. Who would have thought such a book is out there?.... especially for kids!
