Preparing for Christ - Our Advent Family Time

We really wanted to teach the kids the Christmas story in advance of Christmas day and really get them to focus on Christ rather than Claus. My Bible Study Fellowship group had a great resource on sharing the Christmas story with kids that we adapted it to fit our family time together. We haven't missed a night since Advent started and the kids look forward to "Candles" every night.
The first week we focused on the actual Birth of Christ and the Old Testament Promise of a Savior King, reading Isaiah 9:6 straight from the Bible. I made four paper candles on popsicle sticks and wrote the four prophetic names in that scripture reading: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace on each candle. Each night we gathered around the coffee table and turned out the lights and lit 3 candles to represent the Trinity. Then we read their children's Bible version of the Birth of Jesus, followed with the Isaiah reading and the popsicle candles, and then at the end they got to open a small purple triangle treat box filled with a piece of chocolate. We sang "God Is So Good" all week long.

Our second week will focus on the Angels and the Shepherds using Luke 2:8-14 as our scripture reading. We have a wooden nativity set that the kids will set up with the Holy Family and the visiting shepherds and their sheep. Our song for the week will be "Hark the Herald Angels Sing".

Still working on the third week.... Here's a little clip of what we are doing.
