My Mother's Day Gift

Let me preface this blog entry by telling you how much I love eating crab legs, and most importantly how I love the way Guido's Abuela and Aunt Millie prepare it to eat! But because they are so expensive it's left to enjoy only on special occasions. So for Mother's Day you can imagine my great surprise when I found out that my gift from Guido's family was a huge pot of steaming delicious crab legs.

As the women of the house began to feast on this great treasure of the sea, in walks Guido's Uncle Eddie with a 10 bag of Alaskan King Crab about twice the size of the crabs we are currently eating! Guido's Uncle Eddie works for a restaurant and got an incredible deal on these fresh crab legs. So here we are up to our knees in crab legs and I only in town for a short visit. What a dilemma for me. There wasn't enough time to eat all these crab legs. It left only one possible solution and that was for me to take them home and eat them.

We split the 10lbs. bag and I took half home. We made it home to Georgia without spoiling them, but I have no clue how to cook crab legs! So I had my first experience cooking crab legs and I must say they weren't half bad. They were close to Abuela and Aunt Millie's recipe but not quite on the dot. After thoroughly cleaning the legs, I divided them between two huge pots. I peeled and mashed half a head of garlic, added a stick of butter and some water for steaming to each of the pots. I cooked it for about 90 minutes on low and voila! I was so shocked that I actually did it. Guido and I had a crab feast for two days. Thank you Uncle Eddie for a gift so wonderful! Thank you Mom, Abuela and Millie for making my Mother's Day also delicious.
